[Blue Avocado] Teach for America: Icon with Feet of Clay? | Blue Avocado: I'm often surprised by how much at this old age of mine I still draw on what I learned as an undergraduate college student, as a grad student, as a work-study student (before the advent of "internships") in the anti-poverty world, as a young employee in nonprofit community development, and elsewhere. I treasure those mentors who guided my on-the-job learning, but also those mentors who guided my studies, my research, my classroom training too, and particularly those mentors who did both!

[Truthdig: Drilling Beneath the Headlines] Mike Rose: Blinded by Reform - Truthdig: In most cases, providing an environment of self-fulfillment will not bring about a good supply of adequately trained, happily subservient wage slaves. In most cases, it will be very hard to construct tests that will measure actual teaching performance or predict later ability or accomplishment in life, because what most tests do is measure a person’s ability to take tests.

[Byliner: Stories for Barry Goldberg] Political Bet of the Year - By Mickey Kaus - Slate Magazine: 111, the book describes how Thomas received a $1.5 million book advance for his memoirs from Rupert Murdoch, and adds in a parenthetical, "More than three years after the contract was announced, and $500,000 paid to him, Thomas had still not delivered a manuscript." If that's just faulting Justice Thomas for being a slow writer, that's fine, though I expect that three years isn't that long a time for writing a manuscript. But if the claim is that he's somehow taking money and delivering only vaporware ”” which I think is the impression the parenthetical leave ”” might it have been worth mentioning that the book is coming out just a few weeks after The Nine?

[CNN Political Ticker] CNN Political Ticker: All politics, all the time Blog Archive ...: sen obama has no right bringing up racial issues just to get more black votes in SC,he fails to realize it was white iowa and white newhampshire that gave him that recent boost in the polls, but i noticed this so called obama phenomenom has diminished rapidly since this negative racial stuff in the past week.,im sick of hearing the press and others saying hillary cried, she didnt cry,not a tear, she simple got a little emotional, cry?not quite.hillary won NH by 7000 votes for one reason, she out performed obama and that little oportunistic rat john edwards in the NH debate,on the issues, she was clearly more detailed and prepared. iwould love cnn to ask obama 2 questions on next weeks debate……….mr obama u seem to mention your extensive civil rights efforts but we rarely if ever hear you mr hissien obama discuss the evergrowing escalating problem of black on black crime and BLACK ON WHITE crime in the US…..1 million blacks in prison and the welfare issue with african americans and what actions will u take mr obama if elected to fix the black crime problem in the us……??,also another question for mr obama, not to long ago in one of the debates you promised to bring troups home and have national healthcare by THE END OF MY FIRST TERM……..most recently in one of obamas repetitive speeches he now says will bring troups home in 6 months whats changed this promise u made just months ago, flip flop

[The Swamp] Hillary Clinton keeps calling Obama an empty suit: The Swamp: Before Obama even had a lead in the polls my first comment on the swamp was that Obama has a lot of rhetoric and not a lot of substance, many months later he has filled those shoes, I said all Kerry had was Vietnam and all Obama has is change, moths later Kerry endorsed Obama (like meets like), I said the party was going to self combust while the Republicans sit back and watch as the Obama clan began to bank on the Clinton Derangement Syndrome to make their candidate look better (and win over Repub), and months later that's exactly where we're at, I said that if the surge proves success (and success will be in the eye of the beholder as the dems and reps disagree on how it works) then it's worth the continued effort, months later in the eyes of the Reps the surge has reduced the violence so in their eyes it has(I know the Dems concentrate on the politcal room to breath aspect)--none the less McCain will put up a good fight. People want to say that Hillary lost to a newbie.

[Pajamas Media] Pajamas Media » Obama Supporter Assaults Female McCain Volunteer ...: the other day there was a report of a similiar incident at a palin rally, where an obama supporter was attacked, its all B.S. i wish people would just shut up and vote, everytime something happens that makes a little news, folks from the other side eat it up like its absolute fodder, what ever happened to descency, instead of always speaking out against abortion, as if that one issue is a measure of your closeness to heavens doors, its your entire being that makes you, not just a few issues, and they must be your own thoughts, for noone can stand in your place when judgement comes, so, enough of this back and forth, this country is in serious trouble, and its not because of so-called liberals, when a leader is in power, he must accept everything that happens while he’s at the helm, you cant just take the credit when things appear to be going good, now that’s honor,i wonder, if people stopped going along with sound bites, and scripts, and notes, would they really have a real thought of their own, im also amazed at the news, not because republicans always attack the so-called liberal media, but, because they never answer the charge, makes you wonder, who really owns the news, my favorite news was with dan rather, ted koppel, and bob seifert, straight news, even though some thought rather was biased in his report on bush’s national guard farse, news is news, if someone were to pull a story similiar to that about obama, they would be vigorously defended by republicans, just a word to the wise, life is way too short to be this up in arms about anything, except your family and friends, god could care less about whether you agree with sarah palin or not, there seems to be too many small minded people not only running around in this country, but also running it, and thats sad, liberal, ha ha ha, if liberal means open minded, accepting, i actually read the definition of the word, and you know what, i found nothing negative or shameful in it, dont take my word, look it up,then read the definition of conservative, if you want change, i would side with liberals instead of conservatives, the country is on the brink of all out financial chaos, mistrust, meddling in other nations affairs, and what amounts to your rights being flushed down the toilet, and all we seem to care about is this political game, where your guy is your guy, no matter what, everyone is entitled to his or her opinion, and i have stated mine.
