The Green Files > We Believe Global Warming is Happening, Just Not Necessarily to Us ...
[TreeHugger] This inverted pyramid isn't entirely irrational: after all, if you ask whether problem X is going to hurt some members of a very large group of people (the world) then the chances are that it will: but select a smaller group of people (pop of US) - especially given that this group is well off, educated, and has government with a global monopoly of force - and it's less likely to hit them. Move to the individual level and it's even clearer: "The people living on the waterfront in my town might be for it, but I'm not one of them so I'll be OK." This is not magical thinking.

[FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right] FiveThirtyEight: Politics Done Right: The Environmental Inverted ...: Recall his trenchant Racists for Obama piece, as controversial a theory - - and one that requires a degree of cunning that these sort of people are not normally supposed to possess. So in my mind, having observed the Orwellian lack of transparency of the Obama Administration, Sean is already casting a jaundiced eye on the Administration and its goals so as to better assure himself and his journalistic audience of the veracity of what he is reporting, and, concededly, what he seeks to encourage.
[John Quiggin] Yet more nonsense on global warming at John Quiggin: Against this, global warming deniers such as yourselves have, predictably, seized upon the recent cold snap in Europe, which is said to be the coldest in 10 or 20 years (or in the case of the Czech Republic, since 1940), to convince the rest of us that all is well, after all. We need no longer entertain any fear that having dug up and burnt, so far, nearly half of all the carbon sequestered into the ground over many tens of millions of years may have dire consequences for the world’s climate patterns.
[Climate and Capitalism] Will Population Control Solve the Climate Crisis? : Climate and ...: Either fossil fuels area over because they are running out, or they’re over because their continued use means planet- wide extinction on the scale of the Great Dying at the end of the Permian era. Either way, the population boom that arose from the fossil fuel boom under industrial capitalism and socialism is simply _over_.
[MetaFilter] Prophesy of economic collapse 'coming true' | MetaFilter: We would go through a couple of decades of real hurt (as Japan and parts of Europe are now with their inverted population pyramids) but come out stronger, as we'd have a leaner, more educated population that can support itself while maintaining a high living standard. They had the audacity to tell me that starvation, malnutrition, and wars in Africa and Asia would instead serve that purpose.
[WE Blog] | WE Blog: By the way for those WE Bloggers who are sticklers for accuracy, I just noticed that in my first comment on this blog thread above, I should have said in the third paragraph: “… the winter solstice occured this morning (December 22nd, 2007) at EIGHT MINUTES after midnight.”
[New World Encyclopedia] Public relations - New World Encyclopedia: People who are professionals in public relations use different methods for analyzing the results of their work such as focus groups, surveys, and one-on-one interviews. These same methods are used in defining what medium of communication will be used in the process of strategy and what tools will be used in relaying the message, such as press releases, brochures, websites, media packs, video news releases, news conferences, and in-house publications.
[The Oil Drum - Discussions about Energy and Our Future] The Oil Drum | A Few Thoughts on Religions and on Belief Systems: As Physicist Eugene Skonikoff said way back in 1990, "The vision of an inverted pyramid comes to mind, of a steadily broadening basis of implications that rest ultimately on the point of a relatively small band of dedicated scientists who recognize the uncertainties of their work." Of course in the 19 years since he wrote "Gridlock on Global Warming," our understanding has vastly increased as has the small band of dedicated scientists.
[Secular Right] Secular Right » Who is pro-science, the Left or the Right?: All political power vested in the Federal government is loaned to them by the people, who are the sovereigns in our land. We sovereigns employ the civil servants in our government, from the buck private all the way down to the President, who is at the very bottom of the inverted pyramid, as the employee of the private.
[canada] The Oil Drum: Canada | The Resurgence of Risk - A Primer on the ...: Its point rests squarely on those at the bottom - for instance the subprime mortgage holders whos relatively modest debts have been leveraged into trillions of dollars worth of derivatives. Each dollar of subprime mortgage debt probably underpins at least a hundred dollars of additional debt, and these loans will go into default en masse once the ARMs begin to reset in earnest.

[BBC Blog Network] BBC - Mark Mardell's Euroblog: Learn EU-speak: The fact that people are unable to articulate their fears or frustrations speaks to the biases and perceptual differences I mentioned above. Saying that the 'small people' or any other people are not sufficiently informed, that they have not taken the time to study what is available, or claiming that ordinary people cannot deal with the larger issues are symptoms of haste and bias.

[Captain's Blog] Captain's Blog: Somebody Tried to Kill Hurricane Wilma ... BEFORE ...: "What is it?" If the excavations are designed to remove the limestone blocks from inside that keep the Pyramid from "resonating", perhaps its the "resonance state" that will have us asking, "What is it?" The connection of the book and "what's in the word now" is that we all have to know that death is constantly on our right shoulder. No matter how many material possession we amass, it will call us one day.

Unless powers to be come up with another asset class (and suckers able and willing to play it again) that even more credit can be created against (the new Ponzi units have to support the old ones in expotential manner), the whole scam has to unravel.
