[NOAA News Releases] NOAA - National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration ...: The research team, a collaboration between scientists at NOAA’s Hollings Marine Laboratory in Charleston, S.C., the Medical University of South Carolina and researchers at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, N.C., noticed a sponge that seemed to thrive despite being located in the midst of a dying coral reef. After extraction, testing showed that one of the isolated chemicals, algeliferin, breaks down a biofilm barrier that bacteria use to protect themselves from threats including antibiotics.  The same chemical can also disrupt or inhibit formation of biofilm on a variety of bacteria previously resistant to antibiotics which could lead to both palliative and curative response treatment depending on the problem being addressed.

[Brightsurf Science News :: Cultures News] What if Washingtonians don't address climate change?: Based on recent analysis, major climatic changes for Washington would include increases in temperatures, more extreme events such as severe storms, droughts and heat waves, decreases in snowfall and increases in rainfall and habitat losses for a variety of species along with a rise in undesired species and related diseases. It is a new scientific branch formed on the base of Geography, Geology and marine science.

[Oceanus] WHOI : Oceanus : Are Pollutants Disrupting Marine Ecosystems?: Insects and crustaceans are both arthropods, which in addition to jointed limbs, share another common trait: They use the same hormones to carry out a wide range of crucial biological functions, ranging from molting, egg production, embryonic development, and sexual maturation, to energy metabolism, and even limb regeneration. So an insecticide targeted to disrupt hormones that help mosquitoes develop could easily disrupt other essential biological functions in crustaceans, Verslycke said.

[Mankind2100: The Future] Global Environment Outlook (GEO-4): Chapter 7 - Vulnerability of ...: . These costs may include tensions between the state and riparian users, as well as between upstream and downstream riparian groups. The overexploitation of global commons, such as fisheries, the focus of another archetype, brings smaller-scale fisher groups and their governments into conflict with transnational or foreign-flagged ships that venture into exclusive economic zones from the depleted commons. Future energy generation and climate change directly link to security concerns for both oil-importing and oil exporting countries. In rapidly urbanizing coastal zones and SIDS, conflicts emerge over competition for the environment for tourism-related activities, or for its environmental services associated with marine ecosystems and local livelihoods. Greater attention to proper management of ecosystems and valuable resources promises lower vulnerability to violence and greater overall well-being.
