[Travel] The Sydney Morning Herald Blogs: Travel: Voluntarily paying significantly above the going rate - and I'm talking about these stupid 100+% tips, distorts the economy and messes it up for locals (vendors can't be bothered servicing other locals because clueless tourists will pay them several times the going rate) and future visitors (future tourists have to argue the price of everything, or get surly service if they don't tip or only tip 10%). The big tip benefits the person you give it to, at a cost to other locals and future tourists.
