Crop subsidies favor Plains and Midwestern states (as well as California, which is nevertheless a big net payer to the federal government). Medicare and Social Security payments flow disproportionately to Florida, Arizona and other Sun Belt retirement meccas. Maryland, Virginia and New Mexico are big net recipients because of their outsized federal work forces (as is Washington, D.C., a special case that's off the charts).

Two of the top 14 were traditionally red Western states that are starting to turn purple, Colorado and Nevada. The other 12 are all blue: California, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New York, Washington, Wisconsin and the biggest chump of all, New Jersey, where the federal government spends just $.57 for every dollar it collects. Clearly Tony Soprano did not negotiate this deal.

The Borah Quake produced a 21 mile long scarp that was raised at points as much as 14 feet and is still visible today. You cross the scarp on the mountain's west side en route to the trailhead. Ralph Maughan has fantastic photos of the scarp on his Borah page which also includes quite dramatic photos of Borah in winter.

[Goodpoliticsradio.com] Good Politics Radio - Alaska: Neither the Governor nor the Legislature wants possession and use of marijuana to be legal as is the case currently. The Alaska Supreme Court has asserted that the strong right to privacy section of the Alaska Constitution overrides other concerns, therefore private possession and usage of pot is protected. Buying it and selling it is not, but possession is. It’s a bit confusing, which is why law enforcement stays away from it.

Truthout.orghttp://www.truthout.org [Truthout.org] truthout, Election 2004 Blog:     "So sometime very soon, the traffic on certain web sites will hit astronomically high levels as the blogosphere goes in search of the latest leaked exit polls. The conventional wisdom on this is unshakable: The networks "know" who will win, but won't tell us. Lets take our own peak at results shared by those working at the networks today and get in on the secret.

Blog.zmag.org[Blog.zmag.org] "It's All About the Grease" (ZNet Blog): The Alaska refuge could supply as much as 1 million barrels day at peak production, drilling supporters said. But they acknowledge that even if ANWR’s oil is tapped, it would have no impact on soaring oil prices and tight supplies. The first lease sales would not be issued until 2007, followed by development seven to 10 years later, Interior Secretary Gale Norton said.
