The Green Files > Open Left:: USGS Report: "Thresholds of Climate Change in Ecosystems"
[Open Left - Front Page] Much ecosystems research focuses on enhancing understanding of climate change impacts on ecosystems (and vice versa) and in developing the capability to predict the potential impacts of future climate change. In addition to the gradual types of climate-related change mentioned above, there is increasing recognition that small changes in climate can trigger major, abrupt responses in ecosystems when a threshold is crossed.

The two work against each other to keep temperatures almost constant for more than a thousand years, and that makes carbon dioxide unique among the major climate gases,” said Solomon.
[Climate Ark Climate Change & Global Warming RSS Newsfeed] The Impacts of Relying on Desalination for Water: as such facilities' intake pipes essentially vacuum up and inadvertently kill millions of plankton, fish eggs, fish larvae and other microbial organisms that constitute the base layer of the marine food chain. And, according to Jeffrey Graham of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography's Center for Marine Biotechnology and Biomedicine, the salty sludge leftover after desalinization for every gallon of freshwater produced, another gallon of doubly concentrated salt water must be disposed of can wreak havoc on marine ecosystems if dumped willy-nilly offshore.

In addition, as water flows north from one basin to another, the introduction of non-native species and the transfer of contaminants could affect native fauna in the receiving basins (Snaddon and Davies 1998;

The reason i prefer the fear mongerers as opposed to the nay sayers, is because not only because safe is better than sorry, but also because they say, "hmm, I don't actually study global climate for a living, maybe i should blindly follow those who do", as opposed to,
[Watts Up With That?] New Study Shows Climate Change Largely Irreversible, Climate ...: If CO2 is allowed to peak at 450-600 parts per million, the results would include persistent decreases in dry-season rainfall that are comparable to the 1930s North American Dust Bowl in zones including southern Europe, northern Africa, southwestern North America, southern Africa and western Australia.

[Aquafornia] USGS climate change workshop to feature leading scientists: Sea-level rise, severe winter storms, salmon populations, carbon sequestration, invasive plants, and migratory birds are among the many issues of concern to natural resource managers that are affected by changing climate. Climate change and its impact on coastal ecosystems is the focus of a 2-day workshop that will bring together more than 450 scientists, policy-makers, resource managers and others on January 29-30 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in San Francisco.
