[nothing new under the sun...] And so rather than rejecting ecological concerns because some have made them into an idol, Christians ought to show how loving God with all our heart, mind, soul and strength gives us a greater capacity to love our neighbour and to respect the beauty and integrity of the living spaces of the planet. Christians ought to be more humane than the humanists, more wealthy (in the things that matter) than the capitalists, more concerned about glory than the celebrities, more free than the liberals and more green than the greenies!

[Caelum Et Terra] Genetically Modified Organisms: A Catholic's Animadversions: The burden of my argument is this: genetic modification ought to worry people simply because of what it is””a way of manipulating natural codes we do not fully understand, with effects we may not be able to envision much less control.  All that we do is going to be irreversibly perpetuated in the wild once the seeds are out there, as has already happened and will continue to happen at an accelerating pace.16  This is a much more serious matter than, say, pollution caused by cars or airplanes.  All engines cause pollution, and pollution in general is a bad thing.  But there is only a remote connection between the use of any particular machine and the harm of the earth’s atmosphere.  The atmosphere can handle a lot of pollution, pollution isn’t self-reproducing, and finally, we and our animals don’t directly consume pollution, though it affects us in a variety of ways.  With GM seeds intended for the open fields””seeds that will grow into plants bearing many more seeds, until, by predictable patterns of consumption and random distribution, these new varieties come to be present in the entire food supply””there is a far more immediate, and a far deeper, concern.

[Cranach: The Blog of Veith] Over half of Democrats like socialism | Cranach: The Blog of Veith: Public funding for abortions will likely have a negleable effect on the overall number of children killed and I don’t know of any conservative Christians who think that Quakers should be allowed opt out of paying income tax because they don’t want to pay for our nations defence and any way it very likely the even the most hardened feminists would give up on public abortion coverage if it meant universal coverage in other respects)

[khukuri] Ethical Marxism: some themes and questions: 13 That the Cultural Revolution involved basic changes in the world outlook and motivation of the masses has been summarized by Zizek in this way: “Therein resides the necessity of the Cultural Revolution clearly grasped by Mao: as Herbert Marcuse put it in another marvelous circular formula from the same epoch, freedom (from ideological constraints, from the predominant mode of dreaming) is the condition of liberation, that is, if we only change reality in order to realize our dreams, and do not change those dreams themselves, sooner or later we regress back to the old reality“ (In Defense of Lost Causes, p. 196).

[MWR: Articles] MWR : Capitalism: un-Christian?: EMU, Goshen, Bethel, Bluffton and Hesston teach ethical capitalist practices in their classes. That is, they teach that one ought to take long-term sustainability, environmental, and social impacts of a given business plan into consideration, not merely what will gain the greatest short-term profits and bring investors the quickest turn around.

[The Kingdom Come] Review of 'AVATAR' Movie: A Christian Perspective | The Kingdom Come: Now, I know there has been and will be some controversy over the apparent promotion of paganism, as the alien race is very religious or "spiritual" in an evironmentalist way -- but again, if we were recounting the history and culture of the Native Americans, to leave out this aspect would not be framing the entire story.  However, I have noticed something interesting in space-based scifi flicks and tv shows -- humanity seems to never really believe anything.  Are humans to be thought of as having no faith?  I mean, society has been for centuries trying to downplay if not altogether expunge religion and especially Christianity from the human record.  Yet, we see movies and tv shows that fault humanity for being disconnected from "spirituality".  The true history of humanity, especially Europeans is that of a people so connected to a spiritual sense, that it permeated everything.  But for centuries, the elites in societies have shunned that spiritual sense and promoted instead a cold, calculated "scientific" approach.  I just find it a bit ironic if not hypocritical that those same elites are now faulting humanity for not being a spiritual race.

[Pajamas Media] Pajamas Media » Jesus the Capitalist: Another interpretation is an economic one: Jesus is saying that those who do not grow their riches (literally, prosper in an economic way through capitalism) should not benefit from the same economic system as those who do reap its benefits and make it grow, and they should be thrown out of the economic system (thrown into the darkness outside). Jesus also said: “Whatsoever you do to the least of my people, that you do unto Me.” From this, we should all believe that those who absolutely cannot be part of capitalism, because of genuine physical or mental disabilities, should still be helped by those who do prosper from it’s benefits, but through charity, not through socialism.

[race42008.com] race42008.com » Blog Archive » Avatar and the Environmental Religion: It’s a religion that doesn’t want to admit it’s a religion.  And the proof, beyond their almost comical contortions to justify these doctrines, is in this: when was the last time you heard someone try to sell you some mystical pap about gravity?  When a space shuttle departs, does your buddy wax rhapsodic about polar bears?  Is your Kindle a source for penance or obeisance?  To anyone?  At any time?  Science simply doesn’t work like this.  That’s both a good and a bad thing.  I happen to be a Christian, so religion doesn’t frighten me.  When I say environmentalism is a religion I’m not flinging an insult.  I just think it ought to be judged on those terms and defended on those terms, because it’s scarcely being treated, by most of its adherents, in any other fashion.
