The Green Files > No IP approval, no mining, says DENR
[CSR Asia - Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia] The Philippines Department of Environment and Natural Resources yesterday assured indigenous peoples that the government will not allow mining in ancestral lands unless it has the consent of the parties involved. Despite increasing opposition to mining operations, the government says indigenous peoples directly benefit from mining their ancestral lands. The benefits include social, economic and health support provided by mining companies on top of the employment opportunities for minority groups.

[theatre notes] Black Medea: Jason is, however, as much an exile as Medea. What destroys their relationship - as much businesslike pact as passionate sexual love - is the desert wind brought into his house, unwittingly, by Medea herself; a fate that howls through the front door and which speaks to him, through Medea's ancestral spirits, as his madness. His faithlessness is in some ways more profound than the original Jason's; he doesn't marry another, but instead completely loses touch with himself. He can't keep a job or support his family, and descends into a cycle of alcoholism and violence; a fate, it becomes clear, also suffered by his father.
[Native Unity] A Farewell Tribute To Mary Dann: In 2002, despite the Treaty of Ruby Valley - despite the lack of any specific evidence that the Western Shoshones ever ceded or relinquished their land rights and despite the lack of any evidence that the United States ever engaged in a specific taking of Western Shoshone lands - armed agents of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management stole hundreds of cattle and horses from the Danns and other Western Shoshones, such as Raymond Yowell and Myron Tybo, to punish them both economically and emotionally. At the time, Carrie referred to such actions as ''domestic terrorism'' by the federal government.
[to see & log ...] On Indigenous and Contemporary Poetry: Much of the traditional content of this art is giving way to new feelings, images, ideas, and aspirations as the indigenous peoples go through the process of transforming their lives and communities through production and struggle. This adaptation to new circumstances ensures the survival and continuing relevance of these art forms to the day-to-day life of the national minorities who have long been marginalized by the dominant forces in this society. From being a repository of magical, feudal and other backward values (without ignoring their traditional wisdoms which have sustained the indigenous communities through the centuries), today these indigenous art forms are expressive of the people's present struggles against militarization, forced evacuations, land-grabbing, forest denudation through logging, mining and dam construction, ecological reservations for the exploitation of multinational corporations, etc.
[Morpheme Tales] ARTICLES AVAILABLE FOR ASSIGNMENT: The whispering pine and fire in the slots and breaks of the hillsides almost seem to speak. Whether it is the robins egg blue daytime sky you walk under or the magnified bowl of diamonds at night, whether it is the glassy, cricket-creaking summer you visit during or the clean, sharp winter, it is that personal conversation with the land that makes the visit different than visits to larger, louder lodges.
