http://timethief.wordpress.com [stolen moments of island time] Engineered grass growing in the wild - A new study done by U.S. Environmental Protection Agency scientists based at Oregon State University says Creeping bentgrass, which was engineered to resist the popular herbicide Roundup and to allow more efficient weed control on golf courses, is growing in the wild, posing one of the first threats of agricultural biotechnology escaping from the farm in the United States.

It’s news more because of the principle of the thing than any major ecological risk, sources tell him.

Organicconsumers.org[Organicconsumers.org] Genetically Engineered Grass Spreading into the Wild in Oregon: Bentgrass is a perennial, so once out there it regrows year after year, whereas most GM crops - mainly soybeans, maize and canola (oilseed rape) - are annuals, unable to reproduce, harvested each year and replaced with an entirely new crop the next. Another worry is that unlike the other GM crops, bentgrass has many relatives in the US with which it can cross-breed or hybridise, potentially passing on the glyphosate-resistance gene to other species - with unpredictable results.

Next to this image of a DNA sculpture I put up in my garden, I want to talk about ignorance of genetics.

http://blogomni.blogspot.com [Survivor Left Blogistan] Where Oh Where Did The GMO Go?: The genetically engineered grass, called creeping bentgrass, is being developed by the Scotts Miracle-Gro Company and Monsanto for use on golf courses. It contains a bacterial gene that makes the grass resistant to the herbicide Roundup, known generically as glyphosate.

Instead of simply juggling externalities and outputs like ecological modernization mostly does, or instead of simply green-on-the-outside remediation of "end of pipe" frameworks like living machines, ecological engineering would juggle inputs as well, choosing particular inputs wisely in the start to maintain geographic local health, ecological, and economic durability to minimize the whole concept of dangerous externalities that require remediation in the first place.
