[openSUSE Forums] Simple CompizConfig Crashes - openSUSE Forums: On first install of suse, I didn't leave enough memory on the partition to add such things as VLC, codecs etc, but I did try out desktop effects, they worked fine. Now I've sorted the partitions and reinstalled, got VLC working etc but I cannot open the desktop effects tool (Simple CompizConfig) without it freezing and needing Force Quit to close.
[Nairaland Forum] Ubuntu Linux - Nairaland: In my case it keeps reminding me that Ubuntu 5.10 is available, but I would update to 6.06 when it is released in 2 months. If you need administrative rights to do something in the terminal, then go to Applications>System Tools>Root Terminal, and voila, you are the administrator.

[Volconvo Debate Forums] Google to launch operating system - Volconvo Debate Forums: It's not (just) the perceived elitism, it's not that we enjoy having fewer apps and interoperability issues with Windows, it's not because we're just hate Windows for no reason. Linux and Mac control the hardware layer in a far superior manner to the way Windows does.

[BBC Blog Network] BBC - dot.life: Chrome - living in a Google world?: But slowly, over time, Apple and Linux will start to chip away at its dominance, just as in the browser world MSIE is down to under 80% market share, and Microsoft have abandoned their ideas to discontinue development of IE as a standalone download (they're already having to play catch-up to the other browsers, and combined with IE 8 defaulting to 'standards' mode, websites will increasingly be written to conform to standards [therefore accessible by all browsers] rather than IE's unique 'quirks'). You might need to wait a decade for Linux to take a significant chunk of market share, but from the bullish press releases put out by Microsoft, they're already getting worried.
[Embedded Linux] Embedded Linux » Blog Archive » MontaVista Linux CarrierGrade Edition: The heart of MontaVista Linux CGE is an embedded Linux operating system designed for telecom and network equipment, including ATCA- and MicroTCA-based platforms, such as SGSNs, GGSNs, and softswitches. Because Carrier Grade Edition supports Linux standards, designers can add functionality by including off-the-shelf Linux utilities without worrying about function loss due to incompatibility.
[The Blog Pirate] 5 Must Try Linux Distros | The Blog Pirate: Okay, that’s it for now, hopefully this small overview will give you some kind of view of these kick-ass distributions that could change you mind about Linux and ecnourage you to start using open source applications. As already stated, this is not top five list, so don’t start discussion on that it’s useless, and remember a good Linux distribution is part of users taste.
[openSUSE News] People of openSUSE: Jim Henderson: I’ve looked at others (I subscribe to Linux Format Magazine out of the UK, so get the discs and the chance to try many other distros running in VMware) but have never found a compelling reason to switch - I have 5 computers here in my home office that run versions of SUSE (mostly openSUSE 11.0, but two of them run SLES with Novell Open Enterprise Server on them). My wife and stepson also both use openSUSE, though Ken also runs Windows for some of his games.
[Source Guru] Trying KDE again - Source Guru: As I recall at the time the latest Mandriva release had KDE 3.4.2 and people were using custom repos for 3.5 and when Mandriva came to 3.5 you still needed custom repos to get your hands on anything nearly remotely the latest version (I think 3.5.3/4 was out while official repos were still 3.4.2 or 3.5.0 or something, I even recall them making a repo with 3.5.0 in it themselves at one point after enough people started bitching). Then to top it off the mandriva devs were slagging off the custom repos for “ruining their distro”
[Ben Kevan's Blog] openSUSE 11 the perfect Ubuntu replacement (openSUSE vs Ubuntu ...: OpenSUSE gives you this choice during the installation, it also gives you the choice to use a seperate Live DVD installer much like the Ubuntu installer, bug again with choices. Not only do you get this choice from a single DVD, but you also get the choice to add / remove programs during the installation which is important to me, since I like to trim down my installation prior to it being installed.
[Linux Today Blog] Don't Get Me Wrong, Linux Sucks as Much as Windows - Linux Today Blog: over the years i tried Linux here and there and finally toyed with the *buntu family, it worked for me, until i borked it by my own doing... in fact now that i think about it the only way i learned about windows, Linux, or BSD was by trying something that was above my level of knowledge and having to reinstall or fix the darn thing, but i found that i could either invest my time in (1)installing ubuntu (or any distro)and fixing the couple little hiccups or (2) installing windows, updating for a few hours, tracking down the drivers for my (not so) exotic hardware either way there's an investment of time and energy.
