[CSR Asia - Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia] Greenpeace activists yesterday picketed the Philippine office of US-based power company Mirant, which they labeled as a toxic polluter and climate killer. The environmental group is urging Congress to restart an inquiry on the toxic emission of coal-fired power generators in the country, after releasing a study recently.

Significantly, the law classifies those people affected by industrial pollution as ‘victims’, making it easier for the public to sue and seek compensation from polluters. However, there exist some problems with the law, which fails to state how victims would be compensated. It also does not allow citizens’ groups to represent injured parties in court and does not set forth new provisions to ensure that local authorities enforce the law.
