[Thought Mechanics - subjective opinions on political news] When such areas become degraded, it may be necessary to make expensive investments in treatment plants, dams and other flood-control measures. Several other American cities, following in New York’s footsteps, have calculated that every dollar invested in environmental protection would save anywhere from $7.50 to $200 on the cost of what would otherwise have to be spent on filtration and water-treatment facilities.

[A Writer's Jottings] Journal Prompts Collection - Part 1: When we travel in foreign places, we often find recurring themes ”” things that jump out at us because they are different from our native culture. Some of these themes are common travel challenges ”” language barriers, foreign currencies, toilets we can't figure out how to flush, or unusual foods, for example. Other themes might be more prevalent in certain areas, such as the strong folk music culture in Ireland, or haggling over prices in Africa and the Middle East.

[Bill Totten's Weblog] Industrialization: Prelude to Collapse: If we were to understand what was now happening to us and to our world, we had to learn to see recent history as a crescendo of human prodigality. When American birth rates declined as the 1960s gave way to the 1970s, this did not mean we were escaping the predicament of the algae any more than the ringing words of President Kennedy's inaugural address had really meant that we could eat our cake and still have it. Rather, something had happened that was fundamental, and that could not be undone by brilliant rhetoric: there had been a marked acceleration in our previously begun shift from a self-perpetuating way of life that relied on the circularity of natural biogeochemical processes, to a way of life that was ultimately self-terminating because it relied on linear chemical transformations. They were linear (and one way) because man was using (with the aid of his prosthetic equipment) so many non-crop substances.

[The Conversion Agenda] Fundamentalism in America: `All Praises Due to Satan, The Ruler of the World': Second, it is not surprising that the Great Revival would spawn a movement that would insist upon adherence to the political status quo in England, while providing support for opposition to the republic in the United States. The Leeds Conference of the Methodists in England in 1793 (shortly after Wesley's death), reaffirmed their "unfeigned loyalty to the King and sincere attachment to the [non-existent English] Constitution." In the United States, two grandsons of Jonathan Edwards played leading roles as saboteurs against the American System: Aaron Burr, whose allegiance was to London, and who organized against the economic nationalism associated with Alexander Hamilton, whom he killed; and Timothy Dwight, who was a leader of the Hartford Convention which backed Britain in the War of 1812, calling for the secession of New England at that time.[18]

[Moving the Goalposts] How Right We Were: a smart guy, [Repub Friend], and it pains me to think that you’re unable (or unwilling) to acknowledge what’s really going on here. C’mon, man… you know this isn’t about “weapons of mass destruction”, “liberating the Iraqi people”, or “making Americans more safe.” (FWIW, A) He doesn’t have ‘em, B) We don’t care, as evidenced by our propping up other brutal dictators where it suits our interests, and C) He’s clearly NO threat to America, much less his neighbors.)

[Parisdaily.hi-fipop.com] A Day in Paris: Fully agree - Gopnik n'a rien compris. He's far too concerned about following in the footsteps of Janet Flanner than about understanding France and the French. The worst part, of course, is that millions of Americans see and judge France through his eyes, thus perpetuating myth and misunderstanding.

[Weblogsky.com] WEBLOGSKY - industrial-strength weblog: The Internet is such that you can't keep a lid on anything. Many visions are represented (as in blogging - same publishing model as the web has always had, but this is a new element in a sense - blogging is now a medium or application of the medium that allows many viewpoints to come together, cross reference each other. argue with each other - an expanded conversation. There are levels of trust involved, despite whether you agree or not.

[Euphoria.jarkolicious.com] EuphoricReality: As you may have read earlier, EuphoricReality was asked to be in a blogumentary documentary about bloggers, set to film this summer. With a working title of 59 Bloggers, the film was meant to showcase fifty-nine blogs that “represent the blogosphere”. Considering ER and Andi’s World were the only two milblogs in the group, we were pretty excited. [We’re not sure why Blackfive, Froggy, or Mudville weren’t chosen over us [since they’re all better sites], but we’ll take it.]

[Novemberlearning.com] Our 4th Blog Discussion--Completion of the Novel: As I finsihed the book the meaning of "Uncle Tom's Cabin" becomes very clear. I found that the cabin symbolizes both the suffering of Uncle Tom and the influence of the Christ-like suffering on George Shelby's conscience. I also found the following very interesting: "I was on his grave, my friends, that I resolved, before God, that I would never own another slave, while it is possible to free him; that nobody, through me, should ever run the risk of being parted from home and friends, and dying on a lonely planation, as he died. So, when you rejoice in your freedom, think that you owe it to that good old soul, and pay it back in kindness to his wife and children.

[Californiarepublic.org] CaliforniaRepublic.org: News of any battlefield casualty is sad. Each name of the fallen represents one more American who will never hug wife or parent or sweetheart again, never look on a child’s face, never celebrate life’s triumphs or mourn its tragedies. Each name represents an empty place forever at the Thanksgiving table, or at Christmas dinner, or at someone’s birthday party. All are heroes, who deserve America’s eternal thanks and gratitude.
