The Green Files > Eel Ice Cream - slimming!
[Slashfood] The Times has a report that Unilever, which produces Wall's, Magnums, Carte D'Or and Ben and Jerry's ice cream has applied to the UK's Food Standards Agency for permission to use a fish protein in a range of ice creams and fruit ices. The North Atlantic Pout is an eel-like fish whose blood, using GM technology, has been made into a protein that will cut the fat and calories in ice cream.

BenettonTalk: Even though I love icecream, I don't have it as much as I would like. Because it has a problem: being made out of milk, butter, eggs, sugar and other diet foods, icecream is quite bad if you want to be fit. (via Cosmos)
inkycircus: They are going to use little bacteria, engineered to produce gluts of the protein, which will then be added as an ingredient. Exactly the same process used to create vegetarian rennet in cheese, many of the vitamins you take, and the enzymes or emulsifyers found in beer, bread, chocolates, spirits, juices and sauces. Slashfood: In doing the latter, I was really impressed with how the two teaspoons of potato starch diluted in five teaspoons of cold water created beautifully thick glaze in a matter of seconds when I added it to the barely boiling soy, mirin and sake. There were no lumps, as I often find with corn starch, and no added flavors it seemed. (via Cosmos)

[Slashfood.com] Slashfood: The EU says that this measure, which would go into effect by 2009, is being proposed to protect organic farmers against the "risk of GM contamination." The commissioner for agriculture and rural development claimed that this move would make it easier for consumers to identify organic products, presumably by making them more similar to non-organic items.
[Junkfoodblog.com] Junk Food Blog: The company's founder, Dave Thomas, came up with the idea for the Frosty dairy dessert. He loved thick milkshakes growing up and wanted a dessert on the menu that was so thick you had to eat it with a spoon.
[Vegblog.org] veg blog: November 2001 archives: It starts with leeks sliced and boiled for five minutes combined with cubed potatoes (I used white potatoes, a variety I hadn't tried before that are supposed to be good for boiling, similar to red potatoes) and a sliced red bell pepper. I used extra virgin olive oil instead of standard vegetable oil for the vinaigrette dressing (making it tastier and healthier), which also called for fresh dill (I used dried), vinegar (I used standard white), garlic, salt, and pepper.
[Diseaseproof.com] Disease Proof: Too Much Soy?: One particularly troublesome study done in Hawaii suggested that men with higher tofu intake had more cognitive decline and brain atrophy with aging than men who ate little tofu.1 This data contradicts evidence that Japanese men, who consume tofu regularly, have better cognitive function and lower rates of Alzheimers disease than American men.2 Obviously, more studies are needed to clarify these suggestive findings and to determine if there is something in tofu or related to tofu consumption that may be harmful.
[Vegan Porn] GMO fish products make their way into ice cream: I suppose that, at the end of the day, "dude, we made ice cream with less fat" wins out over "we did something technical with the blood of a fish," and that's got anti-GMO forces worried about the future. Personally, I'm just worried that nobody wants to give up the name of this mystery ingredient so I can put it on my watch list - even though it's only being used in ice cream right now, Tofutti makes a lot of soy ice cream, but they also make a fake cream cheese that has salmon in it, and it takes a lot of work to understand when a fake animal product has a real animal product in it.
[The Millennium Survival] Mild Foods (or Words of Wisdom): (with the exception, meat) The difference from this mild food diet and the semi-fast foods is the using of using grains. The pyramid shows meats protein being used rarely on an emergency basis's, like a famine or when there is nothing else to eat.
