[Reading Device Reviews] On liberty | Reading Device Reviews: Perhaps the most famous aspect of Mill's extended argument about liberty is his discussion of the "tyranny of the majority." His argument grows from the long history of religious persecution suffered throughout Europe that led to book bans, bigotry, and even torture and burning at the stake for people who did not conform to the majority superstition, namely the dominant form of Christianity wherever one lived. Mill lived in a time when even the staid and relatively moderate views of the English Church forced people to conform their lives or face public humiliation and financial ruin, and sometimes lynching.

[uuworld.org: latest stories] uuworld.org : the religious left: The rise of Black Power gave the African American community a new religious and political depth, but few white allies responded with sufficient creativity to maintain earlier practices of interracial cooperation. (Indeed, one of the few groups to maintain its interracial radicalism into the 1970s, People’s Temple of San Francisco, was itself victimized by the sociopathic personality of its leader, Jim Jones.) The rising queer, feminist, and environmentalist movements so rattled some antiwar stalwarts, like the Rev.

[newmatilda.com - Independent news, analysis and satire] Is Cultural Nostalgia Utterly Charming? | newmatilda.com: The banning of the burqa is so often mistakenly seen as a gesture of intolerence, it is in fact a reaffirmation of France’s cultural attitude towards liberty and equaliy which strictly believes men and women are equal, should be treated as equal and should be seen as equal by the broader society. The essay above is a somewhat reductionist assessment of the way in which Australians interact with French culture.
