Since coexistence crops would block gene flow from genetically modified crops to other plants, their incorporation into biotech crops is actually in keeping with an article of the Protocol, which states that parties shall ensure that any living modified organism are undertaken in a manner that “prevents or reduces risks to biodiversity.”
[Gmoafrica.org] GMO Africa Blog: EU's resistance to GMOs hurts the poor: The bitter dispute between the U.S., Canada, and Argentina, on one hand, and the European Union (EU), on the other, over the latter's restrictive policies towards genetically modified foods reaches what is likely to be an acrimonious peak this week when the World Trade Organization (WTO) rules if the EU has violated trade rules by blocking foods produced using modern biotechnology techniques. Acrimonious because the EU is preemptively threatening to dishonor the verdict if it's in favor of the U.S., Canada and Argentina.
[News.thomasnet.com] WTO Condemns EU Over GMO Moratorium : Industrial Market Trends: While the ruling at the Geneva-based trade group is not expected to flood Europe with biotech foods, American government and industry officials have said it would help discourage other countries from adopting similar barriers and would thus set a precedent that countries must have sound scientific reasons for rejecting genetically modified crops. Some countries have feared they would lose exports to Europe if they were to grow the crops.
