[Bear's Journal] It seems to be that lately a site can only be a success if it reaches tens of millions of users, heck even Google pulled Wave because of the fact that it required more engineers per user than usual and it had not reached some magical user size. My hunch is that Google has gotten large enough of an organization that it now has the problem of team politics and it may have died due to a lack of internal power or will, because for sure it wasn’t a failure of technology that brought it down.

[Geek.com] Google shows off Chrome app store for web games - Video Games ...: Games are only a testbed as Google’s new marketplace is conceived as the central repository for web apps in general. I’m convinced the Chrome Web Store is a crucial component of the Google Chrome Operating System (GCOS), due on netbooks later this year. When Google finishes deploying GCOS on notebooks and desktops, however, the Chrome Web Store will explode and become the most vibrant app community on the planet –

[PHP Podcasts] SitePoint Podcast #75: Awesome Overkill | PHP Podcasts: I know Google Analytics, for example, is a very JavaScript heavy web application that does not work at all in mobile smartphone browsers, and we’re talking even on Apple’s iPad it is virtually unusable, not just because they use Flash to display graphs, but as soon as you get into customizing a report in Google Analytics the user interface is all about dragging things from the left side to the right side and dragging them up and down in the order you want, and none of that works in a touch-based user interface. And so the work that jQuery is going to be doing on their library here is really to bring those touch user interaction events into the library as first-class citizens, and then building widgets that respond to those types of events just as well as desktop-like click and drag events that you get from desktop browsers.

[Werblog] We Always Have SPECIAL OFFERS In Our Pharmacy Store » Blog Archive ...:  As infrastructure, broadband is a means to various ends, rather than an end in itself.  Roads and bridges create construction jobs, demand for concrete, and revenues for bulldozer companies, but their real value is to enable mobility of goods and people, which powers far more investment, innovation, and wealth creation.

[Overview Petitions - Care2: ThePetitionSite] SAVE MOZAMBIQUE'S ELEPHANT COAST - The Petition Site: The results would be the creation of, or safeguarding of the region as what could be the world class number one global international wildlife tourist destination to compete with East Africa's Serengeti-Ngorongoro Crater ecosystem, South Africa's Kruger National Park, Botswana's Okavango Delta, Namibia's Etosha National Park, America's Yellowstone National Park, or Alaska's undeveloped Arctic National Wildlife Range (ANWR) while saving tens of thousand of otherwise endangered African wildlife, while safeguarding the Maputaland CPD as UN mandated while uplifting the indigenous bush people. It is an altruistic-cash cow world class bell ringer.

[TechCrunch] Google, Just Cut The BS And Give The Gordon Gekko Speech Already: “UltraGoogle” or whatever would be a check-off box on everybody’s shopping list, meaning that Google could extract premium pricing for its otherwise very-low-value media offerings. A penny a minute “content origination fee” for YouTube vids, in exchange for some revenue-sharing on the attached (video?) ads would be very nice, thank you.

[Junjun's blog] Foursquare's Crowley: The Giants Are “Generic,” We Are Fun. I ...: check-in aggregation services in the past and ultimately I think that’s going to be, that’s probably a good thing for the industry just so it’s not as fragmented…We’ve been looking at their API and playing with it a little bit, there’s a good chance we’re going to push our check-ins into the facebook feed and there’s a good chance we’re going to pull their check-ins out of it. But I think the big win here, just as Twitter and Facebook taught the world how to share things online photos and status updates and social commentary, I think Facebook is going to teach the world what check-ins are all about.”

[TechCrunch] Celebrating A Year Of Apple Pondering Google Voice: Though Google, in its letter responding to the FCC (Google’s Response at 2(a)), states that Apple rejected Google Voice, because it duplicated the iOS core dialer functionality, that statement does not rebut Apple’s statement that Google Voice works by replacing the iOS’s core mobile telephone functionality and Apple user interface with its own user interface for telephone calls, text messaging and voicemail, which, of course, Google Voice could only accomplish by altering and/or replacing the iOS’s code. Google, to my knowledge, has never publicly rebutted the core allegation implicit in Apple’s statement that Google Voice worked by altering and/or replacing the iOS’s code.

[design mind - business. technology. design.] R&D: Getting Google To Eat Its Own Dog Food | Blog | design mind: As I poked around in the freely available source code and configurations of other applications attempting to do what I needed, I was able to translate the mental model from a client-based approach to a resident service running in the cloud based on the act of pulling down a raw data feed from my Google Voice inbox and processing new messages to send out email notifications. Processing scripts, tasks, or batch jobs running on network servers was not new territory, but meeting my requirements of being free, self-contained, and fault-tolerant was the challenge.
