The Green Files > Anti-soot policy can solve 15% climate change within decade | Bits ...

[Bits Of Science] Like many before him Jacobson argues the role of soot - or ”˜black carbon’ - is being ignored in the international efforts to combat climate change. After CO2 soot is the most important contributor to global warming, not because it would be a greenhouse gas [soot particles after all are solid], but because soot lowers the Earth’s albedo, transforming solar radiation to heat radiation.

[Hamilton Beach Coffee Maker] Venture Capitalist Claims Soot and Smog Reductions Key to Climate: Sherwin adds one word of caution, “The Chinese also release vast quantities of reflective particles into the atmosphere mixed together with their soot. Today, these reflective particles protect the earth, and it is critically important that they continue this practice while filtering out the black carbon.” Sherwin adds, “It is imperative that we accurately account for all these particles and take actions that really protect the climate.”

[BioScholar News] Cutting soot emissions 'fastest, cheapest way to slow global warming': Jacobson says that his calculations indicate that controlling soot could reduce warming above parts of the Arctic Circle by almost 3 degrees Fahrenheit within 15 years, virtually erasing all of the warming that has occurred in the Arctic during the last 100 years.

[Skeptical Science] Lessons from Past Climate Predictions: IPCC SAR: Figure 1: IPCC SAR etimates of the globally and annually averaged anthropogenic radiative forcing due to changes in concentrations of greenhouse gases and aerosols from pre-industrial times to 1992, and to natural changes in solar output from 1850 to 1992. The height of the rectangular bar indicates a mid-range estimate of the forcing whilst the error bars show an estimate of the uncertainty range.

[Journal Of Sciences] Cutting soot emissions: Fastest, most economical way to slow global ...: Soot or "black carbon" consists of particles, nearly invisible on an individual basis, released in smoke from combustion of fossil fuels and biofuels. Major sources include exhaust from diesel cars, buses, trucks, ships, aircraft, agricultural machines, construction equipment and the wood/animal dung fires that hundreds of millions of people in developing countries use for used for cooking and heating.

[Watts Up With That?] Forget CO2 and Milankovitch cycles, new study says dust in the ...: For Antoni Rosell Mele, ICREA researcher at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of UAB, and Alfredo Martínez Garcia, currently researcher at EHT Zürich who earned his PhD at UAB, the research carried out offers new clues on the causes behind the most intense glaciations of the Pleistocene Epoch, particularly on how interactions between dust with oceanic biology influence CO2 and the climate. It also allows scientists to understand how future changes in atmospheric circulation and the superficial biology of oceans can make the Antarctic Ocean change the efficiency with which it captures and removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

[Bruce Everett's Weblog] More on the Climate Change Switcheroo « Bruce Everett's Weblog: Ackerman notes that “A survey of 486 U.S. climate scientists in 2005 found 88% agreed or strongly agreed we have “great certainty” that human activities are accelerating global warming (Rosenberg et al., “Climate Change: A Profile of US Climate Scientists’ Perspectives,” Climatic Change, 2010).” I agree, but have a look at the specific questions that were asked: (1) Scientists can say with great certainty that global warming is a process that is already underway, (2) Scientists can say with great certainty that human activities are accelerating global warming, and (3) There is enough scientific uncertainty about the rate and extent of global warming and climate change that there is no need for immediate policy decisions. Although not a scientist, I would probably agree with all of these statements.

It forms from methane, nitrogen oxides, volatile organic compounds and carbon monoxide, which are often released by human activity.

[Science 2.0] CLOUD And The Cosmic Ray Climate Change Blow Up: That said, this idea that the Sun's magnetic field might significantly alter the amount of galactic cosmic radiation reaching the Earth's atmosphere and that those rays might then be able to significantly increase the formation of cloud condensation nuclei and that those would then spawn significantly more clouds and that these increased clouds would then have a significant impact on climate has been around for a couple of decades now. The new report out of CERN shows that the 'more cosmic radiation = more cloud condensation nuclei' part of it is POSSIBLE.

[Global Warming Hoax : Chatbox] Global Warming Hoax: The attached article details the Von Storch survey of climate scientists by climate scientists with 54 specific questions related to the science and illustrates that climate scientists have doubts about claims of scientific certainty in climate science. The article also shows how there has been an increase in the number of peer reviewed studies that are skeptical of AGW.
