While opposing nuclear testing and supporting environmental causes, Greenpeace has routinely been in the media spotlight, and often seeks out media coverage to promote its cause.

This is exactly the kind of issue that the anti-environmental media and the Japanese government look for to divert attention from their activities.

Orangutan Outreach[Orangutan Outreach] Green fuel gets a black name: When the NSW Greens targeted Barry Murphy’s Natural Fuels Australia Limited this week, the federal Environment Minister, Malcolm Turnbull, was quick to say that the local companies using palm oil had undertaken to get stocks from suppliers that abide by the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil. Turnbull went a step further, pledging that Australia would push for international action at the UN Bali climate talks in December to establish a sustainable palm oil industry, “as part of its efforts to curb global deforestation”.

Eco-Geek[Eco-Geek] Of activism, nagging consciences, Greenpeace, and the Yahoo ...: In other words, individual behaviors are degrading a public commons: a concept we all of Greenpeace have been struggling with for many decades, of course.  When the world didn’t know that whales were being killed, we took cameras out into the public commons, the Oceans, bore witness to the killings, did what we could to stop them, and pushed the footage out on the medium of the day: television, so more people could bear witness to the crime.  Exposed to public view, the practice then became subject to moral scrutiny, and self-evaluation by the practitioners.  Russia, Spain, Australia, and Chile quit.  A few others carried on, but in the face of mounting disapproval, and eventually we got the moratorium on commercial whaling, which hasn’t eradicated the practice but HAS severely constrained and reduced the practitioners.   We created a global conscience around whaling, a moral question, where none had existed previously.

It is because of the community links and the easy sharing mechanisms that a video can reach high visibility and become “viral”, shared rapidly over the Internet and achieving notoriety.

Climate Crisis Coalition - Daily Newshttp://www.climatecrisiscoalition.org/blog/?p=395 [Climate Crisis Coalition - Daily News] Weekend Summary: . By David Cay Johnson, The New York Times, March 29, 2007. ”Income inequality grew significantly in 2005, with the top 1 percent of Americans ”” those with incomes that year of more than $348,000 ”” receiving their largest share of national income since 1928, analysis of newly released tax data shows. The top 10 percent, roughly those earning more than $100,000, also reached a level of income share not seen since before the Depression. While total reported income in the United States increased almost 9 percent in 2005, the most recent year for which such data is available, average incomes for those in the bottom 90 percent dipped slightly compared with the year before, dropping $172, or 0.6 percent. The gains went largely to the top 1 percent, whose incomes rose to an average of more than $1.1 million each, an increase of more than $139,000, or about 14 percent. The new data also shows that the top 300,000 Americans collectively enjoyed almost as much income as the bottom 150 million Americans. Per person, the top group received 440 times as much as the average person in the bottom half earned, nearly doubling the gap from 1980. Prof. Emmanuel Saez, the University of California, Berkeley, economist who analyzed the Internal Revenue Service data with Prof. Thomas Piketty of the Paris School of Economics, said such growing disparities were significant in terms of social and political stability.”
