Massive Climate Change Action in DC Scores Early Victory ...

[AlterNet.org: PEEK] "Big Coal is on a roll in the nation's capital, winning early rounds this week in what promises to be a long fight over fossil fuels and climate change. Despite a well-funded ad campaign by environmentalists attacking the industry, and a huge coal-ash spill in Tennessee that has led to calls for more regulation, the industry has received positive assurances this week from President-elect Barack Obama's nominees that the new administration is committed to keeping coal a big part of the nation's energy source." --Stephen Power and Siobhan Hughes, The Wall Street Journal, 15 January 2009

[The Caucus] , stripped the EPA of their power to enforce the laws against many of the worst polluters in the US, and exempted many of the worst polluters in our nation from ever being tried or held responsible for their crimes, but when Michelle Obama goes to the agency for a couple hours and talks about a new vision, Ann is up in arms. As usual Ann, that’s just plain shameful of you.

China Digital Times » Climate Change: Chance for US-China Cooperation

[China Digital Times] Secretary Clinton will no doubt be welcomed back to China in the future. The question is whether or not she is willing to step away from a crumbling paradigm of U.S.-China relations and provide the reset of the relationship that both countries desperately need to move forward, both during a time of massive economic uncertainty and beyond.

Great Lake's sinkholes host exotic ecosystems

[Science Current Events | Science News | Brightsurf.com] As little as 20 meters (66 feet) below the surface of Lake Huron, the third largest of North America's Great Lakes, peculiar geological formations-sinkholes made by water dissolving parts of an ancient underlying seabed-harbor bizarre ecosystems where the fish typical of the huge freshwater lake are rarely to be seen. Instead, brilliant purple mats of cyanobacteria-cousins of microbes found at the bottoms of permanently ice-covered lakes in Antarctica-and pallid, floating pony-tails of other microbial life thrive in the dense, salty water that's hostile to most familiar, larger forms of life because it lacks oxygen.

Antarctica's ecosystems need to be preserved | Ecological problems

[Ecological problems] What researchers fear the most are predatory crabs that are poised to return to warming Antarctic waters and disrupt balance in marine ecosystems. As long as water remains too cold for them they do not have chance for survival but Antarctica's "cold safety" is starting to fall apart as for instance temperatures at the sea surface off the western Antarctic Peninsula went up 1°C in the last 50 years.
