The Design Environment
[Web Design Articles | WPDFD.com] Imagery: We have all seen web pages with the cheerful customer service woman, or the close-up of the two hands shaking - "closing the deal." This is clutter, just like the faded Matisse prints we hung on our walls in college with scotch tape. Imagery (photos, illustrations, icons) should enhance an environment by promoting a message or feeling.

Coal-rich South Africa Announces Plans to Reduce Emissions
![]()
[Yale Environment 360] Van Schalkwyk said he foresaw South Africas overall carbon emissions unavoidably rising by about 20 percent until about 2025, after which they would begin a steady decline. This announcement is significant because South Africa generates about 90 percent of its electricity from coal, has some of the world's largest proven coal reserves, and has long promoted itself as a destination for energy-intensive industry.

Environmentalism and Germany
[Sevens] Yes, "In America there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe." And yes, Europe does "have the view that America is part of what's gone wrong in the world." We do not think like Europeans, we actually admire and try to promote people who mean what they say and do what they say they will do. Europe votes for and ignores Kyoto and is praised around the world while America votes down Kyoto but refuses to plan for future energy needs, hoping for some magic energy dart of a solution.

Climate Change in Kansas City: A Guest Weblog By Dr. Lynwood Yarbrough

[Climate Science: Roger Pielke Sr. Research Group News] Several years ago I began reading the literature on climate change that was appearing in Science, Nature, and other peer-reviewed journals. [Evolution Shift - Futurist Blog] The third part of this prediction has yet to be manifested. When two of the three major Presidential candidates think it is a smart idea to suspend the gasoline tax for the summer, it is clear that we have a long way to go. Congressional outrage and investigations into speculation in the petroleum futures market also shows a complete lack of wanting to face the real issue. There is no more than 5-10% of speculation in this market. The upward price is driven by the realities of Peak Oil. What politicians are facing is the huge reaction and behavioral changes brought about by $4 a gallon gasoline Pain at the pump will be manifested in the voting booth.

[Alonline] These would very quickly allow most transport to move to an oil free fuel supply (air transport would need a radical rethink in order to be able to use fuel cells, but all other modes of transport could be converted relatively simply). Hydrogen fuel cells would also allow us to change the way we look at our power supplies as well, as it may be more cost effective for businesses and larger properties to move to generating their own supply via a fuel cell rather than relying on commercial supply.

Ecosystems and Human Well-being: Biodiversity Synthesis: Summary ...
[Newly Published Articles - Encyclopedia of Earth] Although some ecosystem services in some regions may initially be enhanced by projected changes in climate (such as increases in temperature or precipitation), and thus these regions may experience net benefits at low levels of climate change, as climate change becomes more severe the harmful impacts on ecosystem services are likely to outweigh the benefits in most regions of the world. The balance of scientific evidence suggests that there will be a significant net harmful impact on ecosystem services worldwide if global mean surface temperature increases more than 2o Celsius above preindustrial levels or at rates greater than 0.2o Celsius per decade (medium certainty).
