Genetically modified crops storming U.S. market

[ Stolen Moments] The recent furor over the U.S. export of genetically modified (GM) rice to Europe caused us to wonder just how much of the U.S. food supply is made up of GM crops. Our food sleuths went to work and found a study by the USDA that details the amount of GM corn and soybeans grown during the last few years as a percentage of the total U.S. crop.

Nokia’s cellphone margins were actually up, despite intense competition and resulting phone price cuts. The company’s handset operating margins rose to 17.8%, up more than 2% from the previous quarter, while Motorola, at 4.4%, went half as high as anticipated. All handset competitors have suffered from shrinking margins, with the sole exception of Nokia and Sony (SNE)-Ericsson (ERIC). Motorola is taking growth in market share and volume in emerging markets, at the cost of margins and profit. [ Neverness] More good news is that usually toothless South African GM regulatory body turned down an application to conduct experiments with transgenic sorghum in South Africa. The group lobbying for permission, the African Biotechnology Sorghum Project (ABS), has huge funding behind it, including (amongst others) $450 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates foundation.
