http://taoofpolitics.blogspot.com [The Tao of Politics] Health Notes A reader from Canada passed along this article on Açai, a Brazilian berry that purports to have ten times the antioxidants found in red grapes; boost your energy; prevent premature aging; and kill some cancer cells. Wow, that’s a lot for one little berry to do. And of course through the magic of the internet, Açai is available at places like Amazon.com . Cool. I thought that a diet pill (Excalia) that helps you lose weight was a good idea until I did some further research. Excalia is a combination of zonisamide SR and bupropion SR. The former seems to be an anticonvulsant, while the latter looks like the ingredient found in Wellbutrin and Zyban, a really serious psychiatric medication. I can understand, I suppose, that if a person has a serious weight problem, then he or she might want to resort to serious measures to remedy that problem. Excalia, it seems, is one such option. If I was obese and couldn’t lose weight, especially if that obesity was threatening my life, then...

I Heart Arundhati Roy

[ Talking At Strangers] The sentiment is commendable, I guess, but the difference between Arundhati Roy saying it, and, say, some random anti war hippie saying it, is that I almost believe what Arundhati Roy says and almost instantly disregard what the hippie would say.

The Economist talks food politics

[Slashfood] Marion Nestle says that when she talks to people, she hears "this phenomenal sense of despair about their inability to do anything about climate change, or the disparity between rich and poor." A despair that she says is alleviated by a trip to the grocery store where "they can make decisions about what they are buying and send a very clear message." Perhaps people really do express these sentiments to her, but unless specifically directed, it seems unlikely that most people make the connection between relieving their feeling of despair over the "disparity between rich and poor" and shopping for groceries - in this case, probably organic ones.

http://taoofpolitics.blogspot.com [The Tao of Politics] Also I think I have heard of some forms of meditation that center on chewing your food mindfully, and I think some spiritual traditions may advocate chewing food slowly. One thing that helps me is that I use the same bowl or plate every night for my food, so I am able to control my portion size.

Africa: policy on genetically modified organisms (GMO) and genetically engineered (GE) foods

http://maps.grida.no [Maps and Graphics at UNEP/GRID-Arendal] The Cartagena protocol on biosafety, a supplement to the convention on biological diversity, has strong support in Africa, with a majority of the countries as signatories. In addition, several countries have, in the past, rejected aid (especially unmilled grains) in food imports with concerns for national biosafety.

Transgenic switchgrass to double biomass yield

[Bioenergy pact between Europe and Africa] Kausch has launched Project Golden Switchgrass at the University of Rhode Island, which he hopes will develop the variety of enhanced switchgrass that everyone needs. He says that native switchgrass grown commercially today could produce ethanol for approximately $2.70 per gallon [€0.54/$0.71 per liter], but by genetically improving a number of plant traits he believes the production price could get as low as $1 per gallon [€0.19/$0.26 per liter].

EU-US regulatory gap?

http://nanotechlaw.blogspot.com [Nanotechnology Law] The EU has argued that a sovereign body like the EU and its Member States, or indeed any country in the world, has the right to enact its own regulations on the food that its citizens would eat, providing that the measures are compatible with existing international rules and based on clear scientific evidence. The US also opposes GMO traceability rules because it considers that they constitute an obstacle to US commodity exports, despite the fact that US traders can in fact meet those requirements without difficulties. The US is also adamantly opposed to labelling rules for food products produced from GMOs, even though these rules are designed to help ensure that customers are well-informed about what they are buying.
