Greenpeace South Park ringtone

Greenpeace isn’t too impressed, and since Canada and Spain are the main culprits, the charity has released a South Park satirical sketch, and turned it into free downloadable ringtones.

Earlier this week the World Trade Organisation ruled against the European Union and its attempts to block GMO food imports from biotech crop producers (largely located in the U.S. and Canada).

Involuntary Simplicity

[The Moral Equivalent of War] It chose the latter option and went through a period of time ( the Yeltsin years) where the country was plunged into a steep recession, it lost influence over most if not all of it's Warsaw Pact satellite states, and even lost the outlying Socialist Republics that formerly made up the USSR proper. It did survive, though, and in recent years has made a comeback of sorts, this time using oil and natural gas as it's agents of hegemony in comparison to the old days, when the Red Army was it's main tool.

Bottom trawling: world watches EU, Canada, South Korea and Russia

A moratorium would legislate the largest amount of habitat protection in human history, covering an estimated 67 million square miles of ocean, an area larger than all of the world's continents combined.

[Eco-Geek] As Ian notes, we really didn’t integrate any of the flash Web 2.0 stuff that’s out there, and I was worried that we’d created a site dedicated to creating a buzz, but didn’t have a way to reflect that buzz except through the number of emails sent to Steve Jobs and, with great effort, by displaying the User Generated Content. For a flat html site like this, a tag RSS was just the ticket.

Eating Condoms Will Kill

[Petulant Rumblings] WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Old toothbrushes, beach toys and used condoms are part of a vast vortex of plastic trash in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, threatening sea creatures that get tangled in it, eat it or ride on it, a new report says. Because plastic doesn't break down the way organic material does, ocean currents and tides have carried it thousands of miles to an area between Hawaii and the U.S. West Coast, according to the study by the international environmental group Greenpeace.

Genetically Modified Foods pose health risks. Studies confirmed.

[Ramblings of Aegis] A number of scientists across Europe who saw the study (and heavily-censored summaries of it) expressed concerns about the health and safety implications if MON863 should ever enter the food chain. There was particular concern in France, where Professor Gilles-Eric Seralini of the University of Caen has been trying (without success) for almost eighteen months to obtain full disclosure of all documents relating to the MON863 study.

Despite the fire and brimstone, the report offers some hope. Nicholas Stern, author of the study and a former chief economist at the World Bank, observed, "There is still time to avoid the worst impacts of climate change if we act now and act internationally.
