Miljörörelsen byter fot i GMO frÃ¥gan.

Transgenic tomatoes could cut allergic reactions

http://mrakar.wordpress.com [ miki blog] Transgenic tomatoes could cut allergic reactions 24Oct06 Tomatoes, genetically modified to produce 90 per cent less of the allergen, profilin, represents “a future trend in allergen avoidance,” said the German researchers behind a new study. But despite this offering an alternative approach, one of the main challenges of this approach will not be technical but consumer attitudes and regulations regarding genetically modified organisms (GMO), particularly in Europe.

What is wrong with GMO?

http://mrakar.wordpress.com [ miki blog] Yes, GMO foods could help reduce nutrient deficiencies, but some GMO soy has proven to be less nutritious than non-GMO soy! Are we artificially adding nutrients at the cost of biodiversity only to adopt a mono-nutrient crop that decreases the amounts of other beneficial compounds found in plant foods (phytonutrients)?

Who Wants A Dolly-Kabob?

http://www.lime.com [LIME - Healthy Living With a Twist] Pro-cloners argue that because there are no differences between the clone and the original, the average consumer will "come to accept this." They also say it'll improve quality, (because breeders will be able to reproduce the most superior animals) and consistency (because today's steak will literally be last month's steak.)

Genome archaeology illuminates the genetic engineering debate

http://evomech1.blogspot.com [Evolution Research - General Evolution News] 's cover story for October 2nd, 2006 tells a tale of 'genome archaeology' by genetic researchers who dug deeply into the long history of maize and rice. Their resulting insights into plant genomic evolution may well fuel the fires of the genetically modified organism (GMO) controversy.

Cape Cod in 2106

Youtube.comhttp://www.youtube.com/?v=p4y8ktWz9Jc [Youtube.com] From BostonPhoenix: Animation shows flooding that would result from the effects of global warming on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. This is based on a 100-year coastal storm surge with sea level rise of 0.60 meters (approximately 2 feet). Higher relative sea level will add to the base elevation of any storm surge, giving it more power to overtop both natural and constructed protection. , tagged with global warming Cape Cod

On India’s Farms, a Plague of Suicide

http://gliving.tv/news [The Green Report | The G Living Network World News · he World News from the Earths Perspective] On India’s Farms, a Plague of Suicide Thursday, October 12th in Special Report | Politics, Special Report | Nature 2.0beta GMO by greenmonkey | No comments (via newyorktimes.com) “Across the country in desperate pockets like this one, 17,107 farmers committed suicide in 2003, the most recent year for which government figures are available. Anecdotal reports suggest that the high rates are continuing. Changes brought on by 15 years of economic reforms have opened Indian farmers to global competition and given them access to expensive and promising biotechnology, but not necessarily opened the way to higher prices, bank loans, irrigation or insurance against pests and rain. Mr. Singh’s government, which has otherwise emerged as a strong ally of America, has become one of the loudest critics in the developing world of Washington’s $18 billion a year in subsidies to its own farmers, which have helped drive down the price of cotton for farmers like Mr. Shende. At the same time, frustration...
