Coming as late as we do - nearly a century and a half after Darwin's "Origin" - we have the luxury of seeing at a glance what Darwin saw: that the pressure of so much excess population is a harsh but efficient test of the value of accidental variations in any species.

Is this the Economic stage of the Peak?

http://www.theoildrum.com [The Oil Drum | A Community Discussion about Peak Oil] We have wandered through the CERA 2005 and CERA 2006 predictions in earlier posts and they came in at around 2.1 mbd.Chris Skrebowski recently updated his Megaprojects projections, including new estimates for when projects will be on line, and doing some accounting for depletion. It is a little difficult to come up with an exact number from Chris's table since he is starting to show some slippage from the earlier projections on some projects, and some are listed with volumes when they reach full production, but he appears to come out at around 915,000 bd for OPEC and 2.3 mbd from non-OPEC.

From One of Our Insiders: Some Thoughts and Data about Prices and Exploration

http://www.theoildrum.com [The Oil Drum | A Community Discussion about Peak Oil]  The biggest fields in the GOM (Mars, Thunderhorse, etc.) are 0.5 to 1 billion barrels with production rates that run from 100 to 200 thousand barrels per day.  Projects of this size are on their own schedule, were likely approved on oil selling for $18 to $25/bbl, and are only impacted by the current environment in that the market for everything from rigs to roughnecks to reservoir engineers is much tighter now than it was 2 years ago.
