Alternet's Top 10 Green Schools
[Triple Pundit - An 'integrated bottom-line' approach to looking at business] Alternet has come out with a nifty piece commending 10 schools around the US as being particularily commendable for green practices. The criteria are especially interesting and are so thorough that I thought it would be worth it to quote them all right here and on the next page:

Hybrid Batteries - Li-Ion vs. NiMH
[Sustainability Zone > Home] If you read alot about hybrids, you'll notice that most of their batteries are NiMh - Nickle-metal-hydride - which, in the realm of consumer devices, are old had. Nickeld Cadmium (NiCad) were the originals - those horrible batteries with "recharge memory" that always ended up killing our families cordless phones.

A Walking Revolution
[ Irregular Times: News Unfit for Print] A friend just told me about a place called Mackinac Island, a getaway destination located in the waters between the upper and lower peninsulas of Michigan. The island is just 8 miles in circumference, but it seems bigger to those who travel it because there are no motor vehicles allowed on the island.

Treasure America Kaktovik Tourism Recommendations
[Triple Pundit - An 'integrated bottom-line' approach to looking at business] One of the key projects that the Treasure America Team worked on this summer is an analysis of the potential for a successful tourism-based economy in Northern Alaska, specifically the town of Kaktovik. The report (available here) suggests that there is indeed enough potential for high-value tourism to give Kaktovik a significantly higher degree of economic independance than the alternative model - continued welfare-like dependance on oil extraction proceeds.

Delta Why?
[Economist's View] Fish life in the Sacramento-San Joaquin delta is declining at crisis levels, and state officials are at a loss to explain why, or what to do about it. The situation has potentially grave implications for an estimated 24 million Californians who get some or all of their water from the Rhode Island-size estuary south of Sacramento and east of San Francisco Bay...

Tinfoil Lawsuit Of The Day
[Barking Moonbat Early Warning System] Here we go: Greenpeace, Friends Of The Earth and four US cities are suing the federal government for providing loans to overseas developers who are building power plants in other countries - they say the power plants are a major cause of global warming, which affects us here in the US - and they got a judge in San Francisco (where else?) to give them the go-ahead to file suit.

Guides sought on electronics chemicals
[CSR Asia - Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia] Hansen could have a real impact here if it were to work with its new suppliers, and there is an opportunity for the company to not only start dealing with silicosis in its supply chain, but to accrue some good publicity for doing so (both in the US and China, where occupational disease is high on the agenda). The granite supply chain is a long way from attracting the kind of attention that Nike or Adidak (only kidding) has received, but it can’t be too far away.

Americans play God, yet again
[NorthSpace] This is somehow totally symptomatic of the American perspective of nature. Instead of doing the hard work of looking at how modern forms of land use negatively impact the sustainability of existing threatened species, they take the quick and sexy approach of creating some sort of artificial living museum by reintroducing large mammals to North America.

The Road to Hell is .well a Road
[unbossed.com] Beyond the details of the Act (which I will discuss at a later date) the politics of Bushs gutting of the Roadless Area Conservation Rule and subsequent disavowal of the opinions of literally millions of Americans, its important to understand just how very bad roads are from an ecosystem perspective and to be armed the with scientific knowledge of what roads bring to an ecosystem (Its also vital to understand the economic benefit of Roadless Areas as well as the spiritual and social benefits to having places without roads - but thats another subject). So, what does a road do to an ecosystem?

[RED STAR NEWS» Thoughts, news and small talk mainly concerning China, from a berlin perspective (sorry for my poor English)] The nightmare of a new global flu epidemic makes good headlines and the media is often criticized when speculating about it. While there is a temptation to sex-up reports to attract readers and it is true that a lot of journalists take the bait it is nevertheless also true that all experts agree, that it is not a question if but when it will happen.

EPA's Inconvenient Report
[Center for Media and Democracy - Publishers of PR Watch] permalink Hughes in Charge Topics: public relations | international Source: Washington Post, July 27, 2005 With little fanfare and only two senators even bothering to show up at her confirmation hearings, Bush political advisor Karen Hughes has been confirmed as U.S. undersecretary of state for public diplomacy and public affairs - the state department's top public relations job. One of the questions raised during the hearings (but avoided by Hughes) had to do with her possible role in the Valerie Plame affair. During the buildup to war in Iraq, Hughes was part of the White House Iraq Group, which coordinated strategy for selling the war to the American people. She now inherits the job previously held by Charlotte Beers, in which she is responsible for improving the way the U.S. is perceived in other countries, including the Muslim and Arab world. login or register...
