Thai authorities close border crossing
[CSR Asia - Corporate Social Responsibility in Asia] Thailands sudden closure of the border crossing for traffic to and from Burma at the Three Pagodas Pass in Kanchanaburi province has led to food shortages and rising unemployment, according to this report. Thai authorities are thought to have closed the border in late May because of suspicions that factory owners were illegally cutting down trees on the Thai side of the border, smuggling them into Burma and using them to make furniture that was then sold in Thailand.

BRC 23: Chris at OrganicMatter: Biotech Vacuum Trees
[sustainablog] Everyone out there has probably heard talk of using trees to sequester carbon dioxide from the atmosphere to mitigate global warming, but what about using them to sequester mercury, selenium, arsenic, or other toxic compounds? Genetic researchers the world over are harnessing the powerful nutrient uptake and storage capacity of trees to clean up industrial contamination in the same way that genetically modified bacteria have been used for 25 years to clean up oil spills.

The State of China's Environment: Land
[Fear of a White Planet] Desertification incurrs several reprocussion, the first of which is a decline in the amount of arable land for China's peasants to use, which we will describe in more detail below. Another result of desertification is a drastic increase in the frequency of dust storms in Northeastern China, Japan and the Koreas, which can be dangerous for asthmatics and the elderly - whereas before 1949 the frequency of dust storms was only 1 per 31 years, the frequency has increased to the point where there is now at least one a year in the first decade of this new millenium.

Ignore Bush, Not Climate
[FaithandPolicy Weblog] The US is the only G8 country not to have ratified the Kyoto Protocol and the Bush administration has already tried to weaken early drafts of the G8 communiqué, objecting to language that includes statements that the world is warming, human activity is mostly to blame and developed economies must lead the fight against the problem. The final communiqué, also dealing with issues of debt, aid and trade, will be issued later today.

Millennium Ecosystem Assessment
[BLACK BEAR SPEAKS] A landmark study released yesterday reveals that approximately 60 percent of the ecosystem services that support life on Earth - such as fresh water, capture fisheries, air and water regulation, and the regulation of regional climate, natural hazards and pests - are being degraded or used unsustainably. Scientists warn that the harmful consequences of this degradation could grow significantly worse in the next 50 years.

Since Disneys decision to scrap the item from its menus (see here for the full story), Aw is pushing hard to capitalise on global interest in the issue, saying that hes given up on the older generation and is concentrating on changing the views of young people. He hopes to recruit 10,000 young ambassadors for sharks in Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and China by 2007. On a more lighthearted note, Aw has named his two children Jonah Aw Seng and Joelle Aw Seng so that the initials spell out the title of the greatest shark movie ever (well, at least the most well known”¦)...
